Greg Fish says there was no doubt about - but let's face it, being awarded a penalty kick in the closing minutes of a tied contest is seldom seen.
Kate Mogannam followed up her own blocked penalty kick in the 78th minute, leading FAB 50 No. 24 Monte Vista to a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Ursuline on Tuesday at the Tri-Valley Classic. Monte Vista's result gave NorCal teams a sweep of nationally ranked Texas power. Earlier in the day, No. 5 San Ramon Valley handled No. 28 Nolan Catholic, 3-0.
Lauren Anderson was taken down in the box and Monte Vista sent Mogannam to the penalty spot. Mogannam went lower right, and the Ursuline keeper blocked the shot but the rebound went right back to Mogannam who scored into an empty net.
"We were happy to get that one," Fish, the Monte Vista coach said about the positive result after a 3-1-1 start to its season. Monte Vista faces another FAB 50 team in Esperanza in today's action.
Monte Vista had the better of play in the first half, outshooting Ursuline 6-2. Ursuline put up a better fight in the second half.
Ursuline's top performer was Kendall Campise, which comes as no surprise. She's part of the national pool.
