Tri-Valley kicks off with a surprise

Talk about it in Soccer in the West

The first day of the Tri-Valley Classic kicked off Wednesday evening, and as the temperature creeped into 30s, the scores remained low with Las Lomas and Carondolet providing some heat as they battled to a scoreless tie.

The surprise of the day occured with La Salle stunned FAB 50 No. 16 Monte Vista, 1-0. Last year's Gold Division champion Horizon gave up two first-half goals and fell to Iolani (Hawaii), 2-0. Clovis and Bishop School ended in a 0-0 tie.

Despite the lack of scoring in the Las Lomas-Carondolet match, the two teams, particularly their respective keepers, provided plenty of fireworks.

"She's very good. She plays above her height," Las Lomas head coach Tom Frangoulis said about his keeper Emily Garbez's play. "She expects to not give up easy goals and she has done it. She's been the starting goal keeper for two years."

Garbez, set the tone early as Carondolet went on the attack. Under pressure, Garbez made a diving save to keep the match scoreless.

Two minutes later, and not to be outdone, Carondolet keeper Daniela Galli dove to her right to stop the Las Lomas attempt.

The ensuing corner kick by University of Oregon commitment Catherine Brothers sailed high over the net as the half ended 0-0.

The second half saw more outstanding stops as Garbez and Galli traded saves to keep their teams in the game.

"We're trying to find our goalscorer on the team," Carondolet head coach Richard Morin said. "I thought it was a pretty even game over all. Both keepers made a couple of really good saves."

A full slate of Tri-Valley matches are scheduled for Thursday, including several intriguing contests.

A battle of FAB 50 teams takes place at 12:30 p.m. when Monte Vista takes on No. 22 Esperanza. No. 33 Nolan Catholic (Texas) faces Las Lomas, and No. 12 Foothill matches up against Las Osos in the 4 p.m. game.
