FAB 50showdown highlights Tri-Valley Day 2 action

The battle of Winter FAB 50 teams shaped up to be the match everyone thought it would as No. 16 Monte Vista, with a midfielder in net and missing their top two keepers, defeated No. 22 Esperanza 2-1 on Thursday.

The game began auspiciously for Monte Vista as backup keeper Michelle Harrison was injured diving for a ball as Esperanza went on top with a goal. Harrison had to be helped off the field and it was later determined to be a hip flexor and groin sprain. Harrison is not expected to miss significant time.

The regular starting keeper, Taylor Gonzalez, missed the
game due to sickness, leaving head coach Greg Fish forced to fill the spot with midfielder Corey McGovern, who had not played as a keeper in years according to Fish.

"As soon as she got in there she made a great diving save," Fish said.

Monte Vista tied the match at 1 midway through the first half as Courtney Jones put the ball in the lower right corner of the goal for the score.

MV went on top 2-1 in the second half as Melanie Buich took the ball on the right side of the goal and attempted a shot that deflected off Esperanza keeper's hands and went into the net.

Monte Vista won its second match of the day, 5-0 over The Bishop's School as Lauren Anderson scored three goals and assisted on another one. Katelyn Mogannam and Shannon Lacy also scored goals in the game.

Esperanza also won their second game of the day, 3-0 over Carondolet.

Mayfair showed up strong on day two as they defeated Iolani (Hawaii) 3-1 and San Ramon 1-0.

Mayfair received goals from Brittanie Perez, Jessika Oseuguera and Briana Rhoades in their win over Iolani.
Iolani's lone goal in that game came from Alyssa Simbahon.

"Not knowing too much about this team (Iolani) we kind of
changed the lineup a little bit knowing that we're up here and playing a really good team we're just trying different things," Mayfair head coach Sal Marroquin said. "It gave us a little more attack. They're a great team. Number 6 (Sammi Teramae) on that team is a fantastic player. She
did a good job of holding the midfield and pushing forward."

In other Day 2 action in the Invitational CD bracket, San
Ramon defeated Hockaday School (Texas) 3-0, Foothill defeated Horizon 5-0 and Las Osos 2-0. Miramonte downed Las Osos and Horizon by identical 2-0 scores. Iolani played to a 2-2 tie with Hockaday as Kirsten Adams
and Nicole Ha scored for Iolani.

In the AB bracket Las Lomas defeated Nolan Catholic (Texas) 3-2 and Clovis 4-2. La Salle downed Clovis
2-0 and lost to Nolan Catholic 1-0. Carondolet defeated The Bishop's School 2-1.

There are four games scheduled for 9 a.m. starts that will
determine which teams will advance to the semifinal matches and a right to play for the championship.

Mayfair plays Miramonte, Hockaday plays Foothill and Las Osos takes on San Ramon in the CD bracket. Esperanza and Nolan Catholic are the only two teams scheduled for the AB bracket. Once the games end around 10:30 a.m., the winner of each of the pools, A, B, C and D will advance to the semifinals with the second place teams in each of those pools advancing to a consolation round.
